1. BOSTITCH F21PL Round Head 1-1/2-Inch to 3-1/2-Inch Framing Nailer

BOSTITCH F21PL Round Head 1-1/2-Inch to 3-1/2-Inch Framing Nailer Review

The BOSTITCH F21PL Round Head 1-1/2-Inch to 3-1/2-Inch Framing Nailer

The BOSTITCH F21PL is a premium nailer with a positive placement tip and magnesium housing. The nailer features depth control using a patented push button, a lightweight design which emphasizes durability, and an adjustable rafter hook that can be used to hang the tool from rafters and joints.

One of the standout features of the BOSTITCH is the rotatable exhaust at the back of the nailer. When nailers compress and shoot out nails, they need an exhaust to remove excess air. On many models, the compressed air is released through a fixed exhaust, but on the BOSTITCH, the operator has the option of rotating the exhaust away from his face, making for a more pleasant experience when operating at unusual angles.

The downside of the BOSTITCH is the price. At nearly twice the cost of most nailers in this review, it’s not cheap. For the money, though, the buyer gets a premium product made from durable and lightweight metal.

BOSTITCH may also have a reliability issue on its hands. The nailer has a tendency to jam, and there are examples of when users compress the trigger, but the nailer fails to respond immediately, harming the user experience.

Overall, the BOSTITCH has some impressive features, but customers may experience reliability issues, not something you want on a premium product.

2. NuMax SFR2190 21 Degree Framing Nailer

NuMax SFR2190 21 Degree Framing Nailer Review

The NuMax SFR2190 21 Degree Framing Nailer

The NuMAX built the SFR2190 with budget in mind. The nailer, like many others, offers magnesium construction making it easy on the arms, an ergonomic grip handle and an air filtration dust cap, designed to enhance the tool’s longevity by keeping the internals clean.

The depth adjustment feature is easy to manipulate and allows the user to set consistent depths. The air exhaust, as on the BOSTITCH, provides 360-degree rotation, keeping annoying exhaust gases away from the face.
The NuMax is surprisingly well built for a budget model. The build quality is arguably the standout feature, given the price, alongside its ability to drive nails to consist depths.

There are, however, some disadvantages. One of the main problems appears to be the plastic trigger. The trigger and the surrounding o-rings are prone to cracking after repeated use. NuMax also needs to work on their packaging. Some customers have found that their SFR2190 arrives with them without any internal packaging at all, leading to damage during delivery.

The NuMax SFR2190, then, offers an impressively high material quality at a low price point – using lightweight magnesium usually reserved for premium models – but is also prone to failures, especially concerning the trigger mechanism.

3. Hitachi NR90AES1 Framing Nailer

Hitachi NR90AES1 Framing Nailer Review

The Hitachi NR90AES1 Framing Nailer

Hitachi is one of the most popular pneumatic framing nailer brands, and the NR90AES1 a top model. The nailer will drive nails from 2 inches up to 3 ½ inches in length and, like many other models, has tool-less nail depth adjustment. Weighing in at 7 ½ pounds, the nailer is relatively lightweight and can be used all day by those with average strength. The company claims that the nailer has technology which prevents degradation in compression performance, ensuring that nails are driven with the same force every time.

Perhaps the standout feature of the NR90AES1 is the “industrial design.” The Hitachi can take abuse all day long on challenging building and construction sites, meaning that it’s suitable for both professionals and amateurs alike. The tool is also relatively compact with an easy-to-manipulate head that allows the user to drive nails at irregular angles and is not prone to jamming.

However, the NR90AES1 is not without flaws. One of the main concerns is the tendency of the lever that switches between contact and sequential nailing to jump off its detent, causing the tool to stop firing. When this happens, the user has to manually reset the nail, causing frustration and eating into the productivity advantage that the device is supposed to offer.

The NR90AES1 also lacks a hook which is a feature on most pneumatic framing nailers.
To be sure, the NR90AES1 is excellent value for money and durable in most settings. But annoying problems, such as the issue with switching between sequential and contact modes could put some buyers off.

4. Freeman PFR2190 21-Degree Full-Head Framing Nailer

Freeman PFR2190 21-Degree Full-Head Framing Nailer Review

The Freeman PFR2190 21-Degree Full-Head Framing Nailer

The Freeman PFR2190 features a magnesium body, interchangeable triggers for quick fire or single shot function, a no-mar tip, and depth adjustment. Coming in at around half the price of the BOSTITCH, the Freeman PFR2190 appears to offer it all, but at a fraction of the cost.

The Freeman features some sophisticated design functions designed to enhance the longevity of the tool. The first, and perhaps most important, is the “anti-dry fire” system. This system prevents the device from firing when it senses that the number of nails in the cartridge is running low. The company says that anti-dry fire prevents damage to the internal components which could occur if the device was allowed to fire as usual.

The air filter and anti-dust cap help to keep the tool free from internal dust which could cause damage to moving parts during both use and storage. Freeman is clearly going after the budget-conscious investing client who wants a tool that’ll last for the long-term and see them through dozens of high-intensity applications. Freeman is so convinced of the longevity of their device that they offer an impressive seven-year warranty, should users experience any problems.

One of the disadvantages – though a minor one – is the additional weight. Freeman says that the PFR2190 is ideal for use by both DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors alike. However, the 8 ½ pound weight might put off some contractors who need to use it all day long. That extra pound of weight over rivals like the Hitachi and BOSTITCH makes the competition a lot more attractive.

Another disadvantage is the somewhat limited range of nail lengths supported by the Freeman PFR2190, with nails of 3 ¼ being the maximum.

Some customers have complained of persistent jamming of the nailer after every dozen or so attempts, although this does not seem to be a common problem.

The Freeman PFR2190 is for people who want a mid-range nailer that will last for many years. The strength of the Freeman PFR2190 is its ability to endure harsh treatment but at the cost of additional weight.

5. WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer

WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer Review

The WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer

The WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer is one of the cheapest and most versatile nailers in this review. Compatible with 21-degree nails, the WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer offers impressive versatility, supporting nails from 2 to 3 ½ inches in length. The magazine holds up to 60 nails, meaning that this nailer is likely to appeal to users in high-volume applications, such as professional contractors.

The WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer comes with a practical carry case which protects the nailer while on site. And it comes with lubricating oil and a no-mar tip designed to prevent damage to wooden surfaces.

Feedback on the nailer suggests that the nailer is reliable if nothing else. Unlike many of the other nailers in this list, WEN appears to have come up with a design that is not prone to jams – something that has plagued nailers (even those from high-quality manufacturers) in the past.

The major disadvantage of the WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer is the weight. Weighing in at more than 9 pounds, it is over 1 ½ pounds heavier than many of the other nailers in this review, thanks to the cheaper construction. Unlike many commercial nailers, the WEN doesn’t make use of magnesium construction.

The nailer also tends to leave nails protruding from surfaces slighting, despite and depth-adjustment option. Users report having to frequently finish driving nails into walls by hand – not something that you want when splashing out on a pneumatic nailing tool.

Although the manufacturer’s box is a thoughtful addition, it is not as reliable as the nailer itself. The box is made from a cheap plastic material which easily cracks, meaning that if you buy this nailer, then there’s a good chance that you’ll have to eventually find a new home for it, either in a makeshift box, or a replacement from WEN.

WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer with Carrying Case

WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer with Carrying Case
  • Features both a contact and a multi-fire trigger for both single and sequential firing modes
  • Accepts 10-to-11-gauge 21-degree nails ranging from 2 inches to 3-1/2 inches in length
  • Depth adjustment lock nut allows users to control the depth of the fired nails
  • Magazine holds up to 60 round head framing nails at a time
  • Includes a spacious briefcase-style carrying case, lubricating oil and a no-mar tip to prevent damage

In conclusion, the WEN 61793 21° Pneumatic Framing Nailer offers considerable value for money, but those who are looking for something lightweight should consider alternatives.
